You do not have to go into Port Hercule to have a Monaco day. The roads outside the harbour and the water off the Larvotto give you the whole thing as a view — the Rock, the palace, the towers stacked up behind — with room to swim and no berthing fee.
During the Grand Prix and the Yacht Show the harbour closes to visiting boats altogether, and this stretch of water becomes the best seat in the principality. The rest of the season it is simply the easiest lunch stop east of the berth.
The captain reads the morning and picks the side of the bay the wind is not on. If it is not right on the day, we go somewhere that is.
