A day on this coast is not a boat trip. It is the one day of the holiday everybody talks about afterwards — the morning the sea was glass, the cove you had to yourselves, the lunch you reached from the water and could not have reached any other way.
The South of France is unusually kind to this. The good anchorages are close together, the water is clear enough to see the bottom in ten metres, and the run between two of the best places on the Mediterranean is often less than half an hour. You are not spending the day travelling to the day.
We are a small fleet with a British crew, chartered privately with a captain, out of Beaulieu-sur-Mer between Nice and Monaco. One boat, one party, one day shaped around what you actually want from it — and the captain knows which cove is quiet on a Tuesday in August.

One coast, four ways to spend it.
Saint-Tropez and the Gulf
The long run west, past the red rock of the Esterel with open water either side. Pampelonne for lunch, the old port for an hour ashore, and home along the coast with the light going.
Cannes, the Lerins and Antibes
Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat sit twenty minutes off the Croisette, and the water between them is the clearest on this coast. Round Cap d’Antibes and it turns the colour of a swimming pool over the sand.
Nice, Villefranche and Cap Ferrat
The coves most people never see from the road. Villefranche is ten minutes from the berth, Mala and the Cap Ferrat anchorages fifteen, and you can be swimming inside half an hour of casting off.
Monaco and the border
Past the Rock at the angle the Grand Prix boats take, on to Cap Martin and Menton with Italy in sight. Anchored off the Larvotto is the best table in the Principality.

- What counts as the South of France by boat?
- For a day charter, the stretch between Saint-Tropez and Menton — roughly a hundred and thirty kilometres of coast taking in Cannes, the Lerins Islands, Antibes, Nice, Villefranche, Cap Ferrat, Monaco and the Italian border. A single day comfortably covers any one part of it.
- When is the season?
- May to October, and the shoulders are the secret. June and September give you the same water with half the boats on it, and the light in late September is the best of the year.
- Where do we board?
- Beaulieu-sur-Mer is the home berth, twenty-five minutes from Nice airport. If you are staying nearer another harbour we bring the boat to you — Nice, Cannes, Antibes, Monaco and Saint-Tropez are all arranged the same way.
- What does a day cost?
- From €1,400 for the day with a captain. Fuel is priced with the crew around the route you have in mind and agreed before you leave the quay, so nothing arrives afterwards that you did not choose.
